Partial Dentures

Partial Dentures: Cost, Treatment & Types in India

What is a Partial Dentures?

Partial Denture is a removable dental appliance that looks like natural teeth and helps restore the function and shape of the jaw by replacing one or more missing teeth. These are made of a mix of acrylic and metal, which helps strengthen your teeth and makes it easier to talk and eat. When you’re missing one or more teeth, the rest of your teeth will try to fill in the space. This causes the bone and soft tissues near the missing tooth to shrink. This will change the way you bite, and if you have other dental problems, it could make you look really bad. So, a partial denture is the best and safest way to fill in the space left by your missing teeth.

A partial denture is made of a clasp and a metal frame that fits over your teeth. In some cases, precision attachments are used to connect a removable partial denture to the real teeth. The dentist might even suggest putting crowns on your natural teeth. Crowns & Bridges help make a partial denture fit better in your mouth.

How is the Partial Dentures treatment done?

Depending on how good your teeth are, the dentist will give you a partial denture to fill in the spaces where your teeth are missing. First, he will take several impressions of your jaw and measure how your upper and lower jaws fit together and how much space is between them. Next, he will make models, wax forms, and/or plastic patterns of where the dentures will go and what shape they will be. The metal framework will be used for the partial denture procedure. This framework is actually connected to the real teeth. When crowns are put on top of natural teeth, they help hold the teeth in place.

The fit, shape, and color of the dentures will be checked before the final dentures are made. After the final denture is made, it will need to be fixed. Partial dentures, on the other hand, can only be made if you still have a few natural teeth in either jaw.

Why would one need partial dentures?

If you’ve lost a lot of teeth in the top or bottom of your jaw, partial dentures may help. Some of the things that can cause you to lose teeth are:
  • Injury or
  • Tooth loss from extraction
  • Decay
No matter why, it’s important to take care of the teeth you still have. A dentist will make the partial dentures based on the teeth you still have. If these teeth aren’t healthy, your dentist might suggest taking them out and getting full dentures instead.
What types of partial dentures are available?
There are various kinds of partial dentures because they are made with different techniques and materials. Here are some things to keep in mind about the different types of partial dentures.
  • Acrylic partial dentures
  • Cast metal partial denture
  • Flexible partial denture
Acrylic Partial Dentures
In this type of denture, the dentist will attach the replacement teeth to a pink acrylic base. The base, which looks like gum, is bulky and thick to keep it from breaking. It is held in place by metal clasps that connect to the real teeth. Even though it’s comfortable for patients to eat and talk with, the device’s size is a turnoff. Also, when the mouth opens, the metal clasps are visible, which some people might find strange. Dentists usually use removable acrylic partial dentures as a temporary solution while they wait for something more permanent, like cast metal partials. Because of this, they are not too expensive. If this choice makes patients feel good, it could stay in place for a few years.
Cast Metal Partial Denture
This is one of the most common kinds of partial dentures. It has a hard, very thin metal base that holds a set of clear acrylic teeth. Metal clasps, like acrylic partials, hold the denture to the real teeth. With this choice, many people choose precision attachments instead of metal clasps because they look better. With the right care, cast metal partials can last a long time.
Flexible Partial Denture
A flexible partial denture is a great option for people who find cast metal and acrylic partial dentures uncomfortable or who have allergies to the hypoallergenic materials. This kind of partial is made of a thin, lightweight thermoplastic material that is molded with injections to fit exactly over the gum tissues. This choice is strong because it is attached to tissue. It looks more natural because it doesn’t have regular metal clasps, and people like it because it’s so comfortable. In contrast to acrylic and cast metal partials, which have metal clasps, flexible partials have clasps that look like gum. The dentist will put the thin clasps between the teeth so that it will be hard to tell the difference between the partials and the real teeth. Since the materials used are hypoallergenic, dentists often suggest this option to people who are allergic to denture monomers or nickel. But because of how they are made, it is usually harder to reline or fix this type of denture, and any damage usually means that new flexible partial dentures need to be made.
How do I choose the right partial dentures for me?
Your partial dentures will be made by a general dentist or a dentist who specializes in making dentures. This type of dentist is called a prosthodontist. When they do this, they take into account things like:
  • anatomy of your mouth, including your hard and soft palate
  • your remaining teeth and how they fit together
  • your cosmetic goals
Ask yourself the following questions to help you decide what kind of partial dentures you want:
  • What allergies do I have? People with metal or acrylic allergies may need to wear flexible dentures.
  • Do I mind if someone sees metal clips for my partial dentures? If your missing teeth are in the back of your mouth, this factor may be less important. For front teeth, you may prefer acrylic or precision attachments.
  • How much can I reasonably afford to pay for partial dentures? Cost is an important factor in getting dentures that meet your needs but don’t break the bank.
What is the Partial Dentures Cost in India?
The cost for partial denture in India varies roughly between Rs.12,000- Rs.30,000 depending on the different instruments and materials used for the treatment.
What are the post Partial Denture treatment guidelines?
The purpose of partial dentures is to look and work like your natural teeth. You will need some time to get used to your dentures, but you can do that by following some post-treatment rules. You shouldn’t eat anything sticky or hard. Instead, you should start with something liquid or soft that is easy to chew. To keep your dentures clean, you should do what you need to. Start with a good oral care routine. Take out your partial dentures to clean out any food that might be stuck in them. Then, wash them with a toothbrush made just for cleaning dentures. You shouldn’t use bleach to clean your dentures because it can do a lot of damage to them. When you take out your false teeth at night, make sure to put them in something with water, like a drinking glass. When you cough or sneeze, you create a lot of air pressure, which can push the dentures out of place. Don’t try to fix your partial dentures on your own. Make sure you see your dentist often and get your partial dentures fixed or adjusted if you need to.
How long does it take for a partial denture to settle?
Most of the time, it takes 6 to 8 weeks to get used to partial dentures. During this time, your gum tissues will shrink, and you may get sores or irritation in your mouth from your gums. But if you do what the doctor tells you to do after treatment, you may get better faster.
What are the alternatives to the partial denture treatment in India?

Complete dentures or a cemented bridge procedure are definitely other ways to treat partial dentures. Dental Implants and bridges that are cemented in place feel and look more natural than dentures, but they cost more than dentures.
